FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - November 4th 2011- Quirch Foods Co. of Miami, FL is recalling all lots of Leslie Leger and Sons Ltd. brand, Salted Smoked Split Herring, Plant Reg # 2406, Producer: Leslie Leger and Sons LTD, Cap Pele, NB, Canada. A routine sample collected at a retail store by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets found the product to be uneviscerated. Clostridium Botulinum spores is more likely to be concentrated in the viscera than any other portion of the fish.

Botulinum spores can cause Botulism, a serious and potentially fatal food-borne illness.  Botulism can cause the following symptoms: general weakness, dizziness, double vision and trouble with speech and/or swallowing. Other common symptoms include difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation. Any person who has consumed the Herring and is experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above should seek immediate medical attention.

The product was distributed in 18lb wooden boxes (40-60 count) to supermarkets and distributors in Florida, Georgia, Puerto Rico, and Nassau BF.  Packaged at retail per customer request.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

Consumers are cautioned not to consume this product, even if it does not look or smell spoiled.
