FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - August 8, 2012 - Tomales Bay Foods, Inc., Petaluma, CA, a cheese distribution company, is recalling all partial wheels of two cheeses distributed by Tomales Bay Foods Inc., due to an abundance of caution because of possible contamination by Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
The recalled cheese was distributed to restaurants and retail stores in California, North Carolina, and Florida, between June 25th and July 27, 2012. The following products are being recalled in full cooperation with the US FDA. This recall only involves a total of 133 lbs of cheese which was distributed as partial wheels from Tomales Bay Foods Inc.
Tomales Bay Foods Inc distributed PARTIAL WHEELS of:
Shepherd’s Way; Big Woods Blue, make date: 7/19/2011 -7/27/2011
Tumalo Farms; Pondhopper pack date 6-28-2012
No illnesses have been reported. The bacteria were discovered during the company's routine testing and as a result of a sampling program by the State of California Department of Food and Agriculture. Only the partial wheels sold through the Tomales Bay Foods Inc. facility are affected.
Customers who have purchased either cheese should get in touch with the place of purchase for a full refund. But all should know that there is a very limited scope of distribution of these partial wheels by Tomales Bay Foods.
Please fell free to call with questions. Contact Tomales Bay Foods Inc. at (866) 249-7833, 8am – 5pm PT and mention “August Cheese Recall”.
